Abstract

Background

Thrombocytopenia is a condition characterized by abnormally low levels of platelets, in the blood. Thrombocytopenia occurring in children affected with malaria (Plasmodium faciparum) has been documented worldwide. However, its prevalence varies from place to place, and among different population groups studied. There is paucity of data on this in Nigerian children. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of thrombocytopenia in children presenting with malaria infections.

Methods

A Case control study was carried out using 100 Children with Malaria in Ilorin as test while 30 Children without Malaria were used as Control. Their blood sample were collected using venous blood collection method from the antecubital vein into ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) anticoagulant bottle. The blood samples were mixed thoroughly to ensure even mixing of the blood with the anticoagulant. Their platelet counts were evaluated using the hematology auto-analyzer URIT D41.

Results

Out of a total of 100 children who had malaria, 70 (70%) had normal level of thrombocytes, while 20 (20%) had mild thrombocytopenia. Also, 10 children (10%) had moderate thrombocytopenia, while none (0%) had severe thrombocytopenia. The platelet count of the test is statistically significant to the control (P<0.05).

Conclusions

There is a justifiable connection between thrombocytopenia and Children infected with Malaria in Ilorin and which it is suggested that public sensitization against Malaria should be engaged to prevent thrombocytopenia among children. The study suggest that platelet count should be included in the test done for Malaria Patient.
