Abstract

Background

Gastric cancer is a malignant tumor with significant mortality worldwide. While the precise mechanism remains unclear, there is speculation that autophagy could potentially influence the initiation and advancement of gastric cancer. we aimed to assesses the role of Beclin-1 expression in autophagy in gastric carcinoma and its association with Her2 and Ki- 67 expression

Methods

In this study, tissue samples from 80 cases of gastric carcinoma were used for
immunohistochemical staining of markers such as Beclin-1, Ki-67, and HER2

Results

There were significant differences between the Beclin-1 score group, with the group negative for Her2 but positive for Ki-67 (P = 0.0442); also, the group was positive for
Her2 and negative for Ki-67 (P < 0.0001). Additionally, positive Beclin-1 expression was substantially associated with better histologic grade and lower stage of tumors.

Conclusions

Beclin-1 could be considered a valuable predictor for the biological behavior of gastric carcinoma and could be an appealing therapeutic target for controlling autophagic activity in the context of cancer therapy.
