Abstract

Background

Lymphocytic (Hashimoto) thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease that leads to hypothyroidism and mainly targets middle aged women. It presents usually as a diffused goiter, but it can be associated with other lesions and sometimes malignancies.

Methods

A retrospective cross-sectional study, including a series of 280 surgical specimens of total
thyroidectomy, subtotal thyroidectomy and lobectomy performed for goiter or a thyroid nodule, received in a histopathological lab in Damascus.

Results

We found 63 cases of Lymphocytic thyroiditis (22.5%); 55 females (87%; mean age 43.8ys) and 8 males (12%; mean age 47.3ys).

Conclusions

Lymphocytic thyroiditis is a common finding in the studied thyroid specimens in our series,
much more common in females. Follicular adenoma was the most observed associated lesion.
Hashimoto thyroiditis was commonly associated with papillary carcinomas in females in our series.
