Abstract

Background

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a disorder characterized by deficiencies in communication, social interactions, restricted interests and repetitive behaviors, in addition to being related to epilepsy and deficiency in intellectual abilities. The search for alternative treatments for ASD, such as the use of substances derived from Cannabis sativa (marijuana), is motivated by the refractoriness of psychotropic drugs and their adverse effects, such as nephropathy, liver disease and metabolic syndromes. Among these substances, there is the therapeutic use of Cannabidiol (CBD).This study aims to describe the effects of cannabidiol on symptoms linked to Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

Methods

Methodology: discrimination, published between 2018 and 2022, in English. The exclusion criteria used were articles published outside the delimited time, duplicated and distant from the proposed theme.

Results

In the researched scientific reports, it was found that after treatment with cannabidiol, most of the patients participating in the studies reported a significant improvement in symptoms such as: anxiety, sleep disorders and disruptive behavior. However, a small proportion of these participants did not notice changes in their symptoms or experienced at least one adverse effect, the most common being restlessness.

Conclusions

The results obtained allowed us to conclude that cannabidiol-based treatment has positive effects in the symptomatic treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and may improve anxiety, sleep and behavior.
