Abstract

Background

Adolescent living with HIV[ALHIV] depicts new challenge in HIV globally, with significant population in sub Saharan Africa. This transitional age is burdened with socio-behavioral and, health challenges; substance abuse, mood disorders, and sexual health issues with enormous impact on global health. This study aims to evaluate the health- related quality of life [HRQOL] of children [8-18years] living with HIV

Methods

A cross sectional study among 113 ALHIV on Anti-retroviral therapy (ARTS) at the Clinical Science Department of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research [NIMR]. HRQOL was assessed using the Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory [PedQoL™]. HIV related clinical and laboratory characteristics were extracted from electronic medical records.

Results

The mean age was 14±2.9 years with a male to female ratio 1.1:1. The mean duration on ARVs was 102.9±36.9 months while the mean CD4 lymphocyte count was 741.2±335.7 cell/mm3; 62% had HIV RNA level < 20 copies/ml. From self –reporting the mean physical, psycho-social and total HRQOL were [85.0 ± 22.4], [78.5±17.5] and [81.6± 18.4] respectively. The mean HRQoL of adolescent 13-18 years was significantly better than children 8-12years of age living with HIV. The age, gender and duration of ART remains significantly associated with the HRQoL scores [(OR=1.212 CI=1.029-1.428), (OR=0175, CI=,0.067-0.455) (OR=0.165, CI=0.044-0620)], (P<0.05).

Conclusions

With the ease of access and availability to a comprehensive care, the HRQOL of children living with HIV on ARTS has improved, though age, gender and duration of ARTs were important determinant of HRQoL
