Abstract

Background

Integrative and complementary practices (CAM) consist of techniques that do not attribute the use of drugs for the treatment of patients, as they are low cost and use natural products.

Methods

Scientific bases such as Scielo, PubMed and CAPES were used to carry out the research, the inclusion criteria were articles published in the last 10 years, the descriptors used were: Aromatherapy, integrative and complementary practices, essential oils. The descriptors were associated or not with the word pain.

Results

From the results found, it is possible to identify the use of essential oils as a complementary therapy for the treatment of pain. The use of these features a non-drug intervention with low adverse effects on the patient, and can be used from children to the elderly. Its action occurs through inhalation in the olfactory bulbs, in which, they send chemical messages to the central nervous system, immunomodulating and releasing hormones such as cortisol, adrenaline, noradrenaline in negative feedback and others, stimulating neutrotransmitters such as dopamine. In addition to neurophysiological changes, olfactory recall takes the patient to some good moment, leading him to a state of relaxation. The use of more floral oils such as Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin), peppermint (Mentha Piperita) and Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) bring pain relief and comfort to the body and spirit. Others more herbal, such as rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and Copaifera (Copaifera reticulata), improve body aches and potentiate the mind, while citrus fruits like mandarin (Citrus reticulata) and sweet orange (Citrus aurantium dulcis) help controlling pain and anxiety.

Conclusions

In summary, the use of essential oils is widely found in several countries as a complement to traditional medicine. Aromatherapy has good results in controlling pain and psychological problems, however, due to the low scientific production regarding the use of this practice, it is not so widespread, as they understand to be what they call pseudoscience.
